EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “A Matter Of Time” by Sennek, Belgium

eCinemaOne, The Kirkham Report, and Planet BiblioMusica will have daily coverage of the days counting down to the Eurovision Song Contest 2018!

Over the coming weeks, sometimes more than once a day,  we will bring you daily previews of the contest, spotlighting each of the songs individually in random order, where they come from, who will be performing them, and more, as well as some historical info on the contest and some of the past winners and participants.

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Belgium, “A Matter Of Time” by Sennek, written by Laura Groeseneken, Alex Callier, and Maxime Tribèche . The song is performed in English. Sennek (real name Laura Groeseneken) is a singer, songwriter, vocal coach and musician who also works as a visual merchandiser for Ikea (go figure). The song will be performed 4th in the competition order on the first semi-final on May 8.

This song has been near the top of a lot of the fan countdowns on YouTube, and I’ve been hard-pressed to figure out why until I heard the whole song as I was prepping for this article. I have to be totally honest – it’s a great song, and Sennek is a fantastic vocalist, but I’m still not seeing the BIG THING everyone else is seeing. The video is a mix of Sennek singing for the camera and abstract images of different kinds of loss – according to the lyrics listing in Genius Music, the song is “about beauty in something valuable that goes wrong”. I’m assuming that would be more a love story than something happening at your place of work…Although it’s not totally my cup of tea so to speak, it’s a great song and could find some action in the US, especially in the AC and Triple A Formats…time will tell. A cover by a better known artist might also help its chances to get noticed here. As an aside, I’ve noticed that Belgium tends to have a rabid fan following no matter what the song among longtime hardcore EuroVision fans – last year’s entry, “City Lights” by Blanche was also a huge fan favorite, finished 4th in the overall combined vote, and damned if I can figure out why…again, it’s a good song but not ALL THAT…there were better songs, IMHO…

Belgium made their debut in EuroVision in the very first contest in 1956, and have participated fifty nine times – the three years they missed – 1994, 1997, and 2001 – they were relegated out due to low scores from previous contests. They have one Grand Final win under their belt in 1986’s “J’aime la Vie” by Sandra Kim. They have finished last eight times, with two “nul” points years in 1962 and 1965. Their fortunes have greatly improved of late – they have had four top ten finishers since 2010.
