BREAKING NEWS: Israel takes the prize at EuroVision ’18 with Netta’s “Toy”

The Eurovision Song Contest 2018 has just concluded in Lisbon, Portugal, and it was a CLOSE ONE all the way to the end. But in the end, the oddsmakers were right from the start, as Israel’s 24 year old rapper/singer dynamo Netta clenched the win with a MASSIVE televote victory for her smash hit “Toy”, already a number one hit in Israel, and winding its way around the world without a doubt.  The song clenched victory with a combined total of 529 points.

Austria’s Cesar Sampson  and his song “Nobody But You” was in the lead after the jury votes were tabulated and announced, but massive televoting for several other songs made it clear that either Netta or Cypress’ entry, “Fuego” by Eleni Foureira, would top it after it came in lower in the televote.

“Fuego” finished in second place with 436 points, followed by “Nobody But You”, which 342 points, just ahead of Germany’s 340 points for Michael Schulte’s beautiful tribute to his late father, “You Made Me Walk Alone”. Fifth place went to Italy’s Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro for their powerful anti-terrorism and anti-war anthem “Non me avete fatto niente”. Rounding out the top ten were Czech Republic’s “Lie To Me”, Mikolas Josef; Sweden’s “Dance You Off”, Benjamin Ingrosso; Estonia’s “La forza”, Elina Nechayeva; Denmark’s “Higher Ground”, Rasmussen; and Moldova’s “My Lucky Day”, DoReDos.

United Kingdom’s SuRie elected not to perform her song “Storm” again after her performance was interrupted by an audience member who jumped up and grabbed her microphone during her performance. She recovered and did a splendid job getting through the rest of the song. I hope the bastard that did that to her performance spends a long time in jail…that was just not cool!

Portugal’s “O jardim” by Claudia Pascoal finished last in the competition, the first time in a number of years where the host country who won last year (it was Portugal’s Salvador Sobral and his song “Amar pelos dois” which gave the country their first-ever win at the 2017 contest) has finished last.

Speaking of Sobral, the 28 year old singer made a triumphant return to the stage, his first major live performance since undergoing a successful heart transplant last December; he looked vibrant and active, and was obviously thrilled to be back on stage at Eurovision once again.

EuroVision is a songwriting contest, so the actual winners along with Netta this year are songwriters Doron Medalie and Stav Beger.

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Lost And Found” by Eye Cue, Macedonia

Over the coming weeks, sometimes more than once a day,  we will bring you daily previews of the contest, spotlighting each of the songs individually in random order, where they come from, who will be performing them, and more, as well as some historical info on the contest and some of the past winners and participants.

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Macedonia (AKA FYR Macedonia, which stands for “Former Yugoslavic Republic”), “Lost And Found” by Eye Cue, written by Bojan Trajkovski and Darko Dimitrov. The song is performed in English. The popular duo of Bojan Trajkovski and Marija Ivanovska are celebrating a decade together this year, and have recently been joined by producer Darko Dimitrov.  The song will be performed 11th in the competition order on the first semi-final on May 8.

Wow…how could a song with such potential go so horribly WRONG? Let me see…let’s check out the ways. First off, I want to say that I love the singer’s voice – she’s got an incredible sound, and I can see why they’ve had the success they’ve had over the years. But this song has musical schizophrenia – it can’t seem to make up it’s mind whether it’s a ballad, a reggae jam, or a EuroDance number. And the three do NOT mesh well AT ALL. Plus, in the #MeToo era, the song’s racy lyrics are way over the top – overtly sexual in nature on the surface, perhaps with some more depth to them inside, but you can’t get past the singer and her looks (and her costume changes) and perhaps the most bored-looking drummer on the planet. Maybe Europe goes for this kind of oddball pop number, and the staging live will make a huge difference I think, but the last song this jarring that was a hit in the states was WAAAAY back in the early 70s – Wings‘ classic “Band On The Run“, which made three complete tempo changes within the song (Paul McCartney loved this kind of stuff at that phase of his career – he also did similar tempo changes with “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” in 1970), but each time, it stayed put, and didn’t try to keep going through cycles like this song does, and it just doesn’t work here…so I think it’s US chart chances are pretty slim.

FYR Macedonia has been around in EuroVision since 1998, and has not fared very well in the seventeen times they’ve partipated thus far. Their best showing has been 12th, in 2006. They have missed the last five Grand Finals in a row…and something tells me they’re about to make it six misses in a row…

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Higher Ground” by Rasmussen, Denmark

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Denmark, “Higher Ground” by Rasmussen, written by Niclas Arn and Karl Euren. The song is performed in English. Rasmussen is an accomplished singer and actor, and is best known for his popular 80s cover band Hair Metal Heroes. The song will be performed 5th in the competition order on the second semi-final on May 10.

You know, the random draw I did to determine the order of songs for our Song By Song preview is absolutely KILLING ME today! Three of the best damn songs in the contest, and all on the final day! Damn, I LOVE THIS SONG! The song is based on an ancient Viking legend about Magnuss Eriendsson, who along with his warriors chose to put down their weapons and fight for peace instead with words. Inspiring and utterly awesome, especially in the times we’re living. The staging of this number is amazing, and I’d love to see what could be done with an actual music video – the song lends itself in look and feel across the boards from “Game Of Thrones” to “The Lord Of The Rings“. WOW! I”m gonna go with my gut here – hey American record labels – GET THIS GUY A CONTRACT AND PUSH THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG!!  You’ve got a potential monster on your hands here!

Denmark has been around in EuroVision since year two in 1957, and have three Grand Final championships under it’s belt – 1963’s “Dancevise” by Grethe and Jorgen Ingmann;  2000’s “Fly On The Wings Of Love”  by Olsen Brothers; and 2013’s “Only Teardrops” by Emmelie de Forest.  They have participated 46 times throughout the years, and their 37 year span between winners is one of the longest gaps in the contest’s history.

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Vislat Nyar” by AWS, Hungary

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Hungary, “Vislat Nyar” by AWS, written by Dániel Kökényes, Bence Brucker, Áron Veress, Soma Schiszler, and Örs Siklós. The song is performed in Hungarian. The band, whose name started out as an acronym for “Ants With Slippers” (huh?)  has been together since 2006 and have become known for their diverse, hardcore performances. The song will be performed 13th in the competition order on the second semi-final on May 10.

FUCK YEAH! (HEADBANGING MODE) Screamcore comes to EuroVision in this incredibly inspired song – the title translates to “Goodbye Summer”; one of the band members lost his father recently, and the song is about letting go and taking back life, especially the one taken from them. Powerful message from a a band who has become known for using imagery in their videos to bring attention to the various probelms the world faces. I never thought I’d see true screamcore in EuroVision (Lordi doesn’t count – they’re more about theater and music as a blend) but AWS pumps it to the screaming max – I have a feeling Kurt Cobain would love something like this. Chances on the American charts might be better than most people think – German band Rammstein has had several hits on the American rock tracks chart, all of which have been in German – I see no reason why AWS can’t make the leap and become hot on both sides of the Atlantic. And the rabid fan following this song has could be enough to push it high…and possibly into the very stratosphere of this year’s contest…

Hungary made its EuroVision debut in 1994 and has participated fourteen times thus far. They have yet to take a Grand Final – their best showing has thus far been fourth, in their debut year. They withdrew from the contest for six years, 1999-2004, and missed a couple of other years as well. This incredible song could be the one that finally pushes the country to the top of the heap…

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Nova Deca” by Sanja Ilic & Balkanika, Serbia

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Serbia, “Nova Deca” by Sanja Ilic & Balkanika, written by Sanja Ilić, Tanja Ilić, Danica Krstajić, and Darko Dimitrov. The song is performed in Serbian. According to bandleader Ilic, the mission of the band is to preserve, revitalize and modernize Serbian medieval and byzantine music traditions, pretty cool thing if you ask me. The song will be performed 3rd in the competition order on the second semi-final on May 10.

I”m not sure quite why,  but I’m LOVING this number – it’s stylish and definitely respectful to musical traditions. The vocals are awesome, the dance routine precise and elegant, and the sentiment of the lyrics in English as I interpret it is that the world is better with two – meaning couples – and they can lead a revolution if need be. Very positive indeed. Of course, it has virtually  no chance to click on the American charts, but if it wins the Grand Final, it could do very well on the continent. And it has a REAL shot of being up there…

Serbia made its EuroVision debut in 2007 and has participated ten times thus far. They blew minds when they took the Grand Final championship in their FIRST appearance, with “Molitva” by Marija Serifovic in 2007. They have made the final seven times thus far. They failed to qualify for the Grand Final last year, so this could be a more than triumphant return for them…

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Nobody But You” by Cesar Sampson, Austria

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Austria, “Nobody But You” by Cesar Sampson, written by Boris Milanov, Sebastian Arman, Joacim Persson, and Johan Alkenäs. The song is performed in English. Sampson is an Austrian-born singer and songwriter who has been to Eurovision twice before – for the past two years, he’s been a backup performer for the Bulgarian artists, Poli Genova in 2016 and Kristian Kostov in 2017, making this his third year in a row being a part of the show. The song will be performed 14th in the competition order on the first semi-final on May 8.

For some reason, EuroVision fans are going great ga-ga over this song. It’s a pretty good song too, but I don’t see the huge pop it’s getting from everyone else. Sampson is a terrific vocalist and the video is very original, with the way his face pops up in a variety of unusual places during the second verse. But the song itself, and the performance, are pretty run-of-the-mill to me; it sounds like a pretty basic R&B-tinged pop love song, like we hear from artists like Usher or Jason Derulo all the time. It’s a pleasing song, but there’s nothing distinctly new or different about it. It definitely has a shot at becoming a major hit, though – it’s got an irresistible pop hook in the chorus, and the sound and style fits with a lot of today’s contemporary radio, so if it makes its way to the US charts, it could end up in the top 20 on the Hot 100, and could easily cross over to the R&B and AC charts as well, and even the dance charts if a remix was released.

Austria made its EuroVision debut on the contests’ first birthday in 1957 and has been around fifty times since then, missing years here and there for various reasons. They have two Grand Final championships that were a whopping 38 years apart – 1966’s “Merci, Cherie” by Udo Jurgens and 2014’s instant EuroVision Classic “Rise Like A Phoenix” by Conchita Wurst. But every good side has its bad side too…they have finished dead last in the contest a whopping EIGHT times, with four of those times with the dreaded “nul” points – 1962, 1988, 1991 and 2015,  a most “nul” points record they share with Norway.

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “La forza” by Elina Nechayeva, Estonia

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Estonia, “La forza” by Elina Nechayeva, written by Ksenia Kuchukova, Mihkel Mattisen, Elina Nechayeva, and Timo Vendt . The song is performed in Italian. Singer Nechayeva is a well know operatic soprano, educated in both France and Estonia. The song will be performed 9th in the competition order on the first semi-final on May 8.

What can I say? I”m NOT an opera fan. But this song is pretty damn amazing, and Nechayeva hits notes I thought only Mariah Carey and Minnie Riperton were capable of hitting….at least in the pop world. And this song, while definitely opera, is also pop at the same time, a love song that talks about the force of love (translates to “The Force”). It’s a type of blend that Sarah Brightman has perfected over the years and Ms. Nechayeva obviously springs from the same seed. The visual presentation is really different, although it HAS been done before, at least in America – Emily West used this same technique a few years back on America’s Got Talent while performing Sia’s Chandelier, and it was awesome. Not sure of what this songs chances are on the Euro Charts, but here in America, it wouldn’t make it on the general Hot 100, though some club play for the dance remix now also available might be forthcoming…

Estonia made its EuroVision debut in 1994, taking part in 23 contests to date. They have one Grand Final championship under their belt as well, with 2001’s “Everybody” by Tanal Padar, Dave Benton, and 2XL. They failed to qualify for the Grand Final in 2017.

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “I Won’t Break” by Julia Samoylova, Russia

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Russia, “I Won’t Break” by Julia Samoylova, written by Leonid Gutkin, Netta Nimrodi, and Arie Burshtein. The song is performed in English. Samoylova has performed for years, and really kicked into high geer with her career when she was the runner up on “Faktor A“, the Russian “X Factor” franchisee, in 2013. The song will be performed 6th in the competition order at the second semi-final on May 10.

Everything about this song is, well, bland – the song is bland, the singer is bland, the generic lyrics about triumphing over adversity, be it in life or love, are bland, the video is bland, it’s just bland bland BLAND. It’s not a terrible song by any means, but it’s not something I would give a lot of spins to on the ol’ Spotify, either. Ms. Samoylova has potential to make the US Adult Contemporary chart, which has a history of bland songs doing very well, but beyond that, I don’t think much of it’s chances, both here and in Europe…

Russia debuted in EuroVision in 1994 and has competed twenty times thus far. They missed the 2017 contest, held in Kiev, Ukraine, when the country barred Ms Samoylova, who was also chosen to perform for her country last year, after she allegedly traveled illegally to Crimea. As a result, Russian withdrew and didn’t even televise the contest. They won the Grand Final in 2008 with “Believe” by Dima BIlan, and have made it to the finals every year since the semi-finals were introduced in 2004.

EuroVision ’18 Song By Song: “Non me avete fatto niente” by Ermal Meta e Fabrizio Moro, Italy

eCinemaOne, The Kirkham Report, and Planet BiblioMusica has daily coverage of the days counting down to the Eurovision Song Contest 2018!

Over the coming weeks, sometimes more than once a day,  we will bring you daily previews of the contest, spotlighting each of the songs individually in random order, where they come from, who will be performing them, and more, as well as some historical info on the contest and some of the past winners and participants.

Next up on our Song-By-Song preview is the official entry from Italy, “Non me avete fatto niente” by Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro, written by the artists and Andrea Febo. The song is performed in Italian. Both Meta and Moro are accomplished solo performers with long careers in Italy, and their decision to team up on this song has seen them sent together to represent their country this year.  Italy is one of the “Big Five” along with Spain, the UK, France, and Germany, and as such gets an automatic “bye” advance to the Grand Final.

I have to say, I am HELLA impressed with this song, easily the most hard-hitting song and video in the contest this year. In English, the title translates to “You Did Nothing To Me” and is a strong shout out to the peoples of the world who commit terrorism, telling them that their way of acting is not doing anything to the world except making it stronger and calling on them to give up their arms and find a peaceful solution. it also speaks to the countries at war in the world, and urges them to also stop. Unlike Iceland’s rather bland call for unity in the European immigrant crisis with their entry in the contest this year, Meta and Moro take the bull by the horns, demand changes, and also demand a respect for those who find hope throughout the world. The video is especially evocative, with images of terrorism, war, those affected by it, and some unfortunate spastic shadow dancing by the performers near the end that marrs the message of the video somewhat, along with they lyrics of the song which appear on screen verse by verse in almost two dozen languages from every continent except Antarctica, a brilliant stroke of creativity.  I don’t think it has much of a chance on the US charts unless the video turns out to be somewhat universal or the duo produces an English language version, but man oh man does this unrelenting, powerful, and anthemic song deserve what ever it can find in the contest this year, and hopefully, it will be near the top.

Italy was a EuroVision founder from the first contest in 1956, but they have withdrawn from time to time over the years, and have participated 43 times. They left the contest for a long stretch from 1998 to 2010. They have won the contest twice, with “Non ho l’eta” by Gigliola Cinquetti in 1964 and with “Insieme: 1992” by Toto Cutugno in 1990. Three of their non-winners have also gone on to become EuroVision classics over the years: “Nel blu dipinto id blu (Volare)” by Dominco Modugno, 1958, third place (and also likely the most covered EuroVision song in history, with dozens of versions in dozens of languages); “Madness Of Love” by Raphael Gulazzi, 2011, runner-up; and most recently  “Occidentali’s Karma” by Francesco Gabbini, 2017, sixth place.
